Danish and British shoot traditions.
Härkila Autumn/Winter 2024 collection: A blend of tradition and innovation.
This season, Härkila has launched its new autumn/winter collection, inspired by the elegance and timeless appeal of the field. The collection was put to the test during a recent staff hunting trip in Denmark—a country rich in shooting traditions that offer a distinct contrast to the well-known rituals of a typical UK shooting day.
Our team gathered on a brisk morning at Aalholm castle in Lolland, Denmark, prepared for a day of bird shooting that would not only celebrate the skills and traditions of the sport but also highlight the qualities of our new Estate collection. This collection, created for the discerning shooter, emphasises classic styling, superior materials, and functional designs that pay homage to heritage while meeting modern needs.
Danish Bird Shooting Traditions: Subtle Differences, Timeless Values
Shooting in Denmark carries a unique sense of formality and respect for nature. The day began with the customary safety briefing and a traditional morning toast—a gesture that symbolizes camaraderie and respect among fellow hunters. As the beaters took their positions and the first birds were flushed, there was a shared sense of excitement in the crisp autumn air.
Compared to the UK, where a typical shooting day might be more regimented and focused on larger bags, a Danish shoot is characterised by its more relaxed atmosphere. Each bird is celebrated, and there’s a strong emphasis on enjoying the landscape and company as much as the sport itself. The pace of the day allowed us to test out key pieces from our new collection in varying terrains and weather conditions, proving that performance and style can go hand in hand.
Dressing for the Day: The Härkila Estate Collection
While traditions on both sides of the North Sea share the same core values of respect and sportsmanship, the differences in attire stood out. Danish shoots lean towards muted, practical clothing designed for comfort and flexibility. This is where the Estate collection came into its own, with pieces like the Kenmore Tweed Jacket and Breeks offering a sophisticated look without sacrificing utility. Made from premium Scottish wool, the tweed is treated to withstand wet conditions, making it ideal for both the Danish forests and the rolling hills of the UK.
For the more formal UK shoots, where style and tradition are often intertwined, our team selected the Kenmore Shooting Waistcoat and the new Milford Check Shirt. The refined fit and attention to detail ensured that these items looked sharp whether worn on the peg or at the post-shoot gathering. The addition of subtle reinforcements and a slightly tailored silhouette make these pieces just as functional for an active day in the field.
A True Heritage Collection
From the tailored fit of the jackets to the moisture-wicking linings, each piece in the Estate collection has been designed with input from our team of experienced shooters. Whether you’re navigating dense Danish forests or joining friends on a traditional driven shoot in the British countryside, Härkila’s autumn/winter collection ensures you’re dressed for the occasion, whatever the terrain.
