How to teach a dog to retrieve – again

Once a dog has learnt the habit of dropping or even spitting out its retrieves, you will need to go back to basics and re-teach the good habits that you should have instilled in the dog’s early training. This can only be done on the “training ground” and not in the shooting field. Some of the highlighted problems can be easily rectified by slowing everything down and being more aware of what is going on with the dog when working it, but it never hurts to re-enforce the various training aspects that you should have taught the dog as a youngster.
