This video shows Tom Sykes, Sporting Gun’s expert wildfowler, teaching a child how to use a duck call.
The reason we use duck calls is to make duck decoys look more realistic to attract our quarry.
There are a number of different types of duck calls – the one you choose must imitate the breed of duck that you are pursuing. The way you blow the duck call needs to be carefully done so you can sound like the right breed of duck doing the right action, such as a greeting call or a feeding call.
There’s more to using a duck call than just blowing on the instrument. As the video shows, you need to hold it properly – grip the sound chamber and wrap your fingers around the hole to mute it. When you blow, you need to force the air through the duck call and use your tongue like a valve to cut off the sounds.
